I got a message yesterday that surprised me.

It was from someone I know, but not well—a person whose path has crossed mine in small, peripheral ways over the years.

Enough to stick in my memory, but never enough to go anywhere.

We chatted a bit, and somewhere between the words,

he said he’d like to get to know me better—or maybe collaborate on something,

though, I don’t think either of us knows what that means.

Out of my norm, I agreed.

I suggested coffee.

He accepted my offer.

So, we’re having coffee.

A small yes in a life that has been cloudy.

I’m excited—open to new connections,

but not rushing ahead of the present moment.

The fact that I’m excited at all

says everything about where I am now—

how I’ve metabolized all that has happened, ensuring I don’t spread the poison,

and somehow I still believe

in the quiet, enduring beauty

of possibility.
