I love my personal trainer.

He’s a fitness expert with depth and loves the mind–body connection.

Our sessions are never just about movement.

We talk about spirituality, purpose, resilience, growth, and nutrition.

The ways our bodies hold more than muscle.

I've been working with him again for a few months now but—

At the beginning of the year, I realized something had to change.

My body was begging for strength and restoration—

not all-out cardio,

not constant activation,

not another push-through-it mentality.

My nervous system needed regulation, not adrenaline.

So I told him.

I told him how I was feeling.

I told him I needed to feel safe in my body again.

I told him I wanted to build strength without forcing myself into survival mode.

And he listened.

We shifted into strength training.

Full-body yoga.

Deep stretching that pushed my muscles to their edge and, unexpectedly, released emotions I didn’t realize I was still holding.

I practiced using my breath.

My lungs.

My heart.

My strong body—gently.

It’s been incredible.

So when I showed up today and he said,

“We’re going to change things up a bit,”

I got a little nervous.

But he smiled.

He told me he’d been watching my progress.

How much strength I’d rebuilt in a short amount of time.

How grounded I looked.

How present I felt.

And then he said,

“I think you’re ready to train like a fighter again.”

First,

We stretched.

We breathed.

We did yoga.

Then,

He handed me a pair of gloves.

He showed me the bag.

And I bounced around like Mike Tyson and had an absurd amount of fun punching things.

Apparently, I have a really strong right jab.

And a lot of potential.

Next time, we’ll work on technique.

Today was a great first day,

Maybe I’ll change my name to Rocky.
