So, I’ve been doing a little bit of crocheting.
It started innocently enough.
Adorable little 3D animals.
Then two scarves.
And a shawl.
Then some super cute 3D succulents.
Then, naturally, a rose bouquet blanket.
As one does.
All of it made from kits or yarn I grabbed at Walmart.
Safe.
Accessible.
Contained.
And then I got adventurous.
I decided my Walmart yarn selection was no longer sufficient for the magnitude of my artistic vision.
So what did I do?
I ordered yarn from a wool warehouse in the UK.
An extremely reasonable decision for a novice crocheter.
I placed the order two weeks ago.
It still hasn’t arrived.
Naturally.
While I’ve been waiting, I’ve been learning.
New stitches.
New techniques.
What I like.
What I absolutely do not like.
Where I need to improve.
And what bores the crap out of me.
(Important information.)
It’s been great.
I feel a little bit like a grandma.
But that’s okay.
Because I never thought I would say this,
but crochet is good for my brain.
It slows me down.
It occupies the restless part of me that wants to scroll.
It gives my hands something to do while my thoughts settle.
It is structure and creativity at the same time.
And, there are over 150 crochet stitches to learn.
It turns out,
there is something deeply satisfying about turning a string into something that didn’t exist before.
Who knew.
