Rearview Mirror Romance

Yesterday, I picked up a rental car.

Not exactly the setting you’d expect for a romantic comedy.

Fluorescent lighting. Asphalt. Rows of identical SUVs.

And then he walked up to me with a tablet to check me in.

Dark hair.

Warm eyes.

Easy smile.

Direct eye contact.

And there it was — that subtle, electric moment when you look into someone’s eyes and both of you know something just happened.

Not dramatic. Not overwhelming. Just possibility.

Recognition. A mutual awareness.

He smiled.

I smiled back.

As he walked me to the car,

the chemistry became more obvious.

More eye contact.

Slight nervousness.

That polite-but-lingering energy that says,

I’m trying to act normal but I am very aware of you right now.

It was sweet. Unscripted. Light.

We reached the car and he seemed suddenly unsure of what to do next — extra polite, extra smiles, one more look before turning to walk away.

I smiled as I turned toward the door.

And then, in true romantic comedy fashion,

I watched him walk directly into the rearview mirror of the truck parked next to us.

It was perfect.

The kind of moment that makes you giggle not at someone, but with the universe.

I never learned his name. I’ll probably never see him again.

But for a few minutes in a rental car lot,

there was eye contact,

possibility, warmth,

and a man so flustered he walked into a mirror.

It was adorable.
