Not Canceling This

I’m going to a party.

An actual, put-on-a-sparkly-dress, fancy-makeup, style-my-hair-on-purpose kind of party.

I get to play dress up.

I get to be elegant.

I get to feel the swish of something beautiful when I walk into a room.

I’ve canceled a lot of plans lately.

Some because I needed rest.

Some because my nervous system said no.

Some because I just didn’t have it in me.

But I’m not canceling this.

I’m looking forward to a change of pace.

To familiar faces.

I’m looking forward to the reminder of who I am deep down —

with the weight,

with the board packets,

with the heartbreak and the anniversaries and the everything.

I am still the woman who loves to get dressed up.

Who feels alive in a little sparkle.

Who feels at home in heels and just a touch of drama.

Tonight will be fun.

Or, it won't be.

Either way, I am excited.

Now.

If I can just find the right shoes.

And figure out how to style my hair.
