Lunch, Yesterday

Yesterday, something happened that was so oddly timed and so unexpectedly layered that I found myself laughing about it long after lunch was over.

I had plans to meet some colleagues for lunch, but I was the first one to arrive at the restaurant.

As I walked through the restaurant looking for somewhere to sit, I noticed my ex sitting diagonally a few tables away with a group of coworkers.

We didn’t acknowledge each other.

We never do.

Not that we see each other outside of professional settings often, in fact, this was only third time I can think of in the last year and a half.

But this time, he was close enough that I could hear him telling a story to the people at his table.

Close enough that, should he happen to look up, he had a front-row seat to everything that followed.

Before I made it to an empty table, another man stopped me.

He was older than I am and was sitting with a couple of buddies. It was obvious they were in town for a fishing trip.

He was handsome, charming, and it became apparent pretty quickly that lunch had included a drink or two.

For the next several minutes he did his very best to convince me to abandon my lunch plans and join him and his buddies instead.

And, well…

I did what I do.

I smiled and was friendly.

We visited back and forth.

He tried to find out my secret fishing spots and my phone number.

I said no to both.

It was playful, lighthearted, and genuinely funny.

Eventually I thanked him, told him I really was there to meet colleagues for lunch, wished them a wonderful afternoon, and made my way to my table.

The whole interaction left me smiling.

Not because I wanted to have lunch with a stranger.

Not because I was looking for anything.

But because it was simply fun.

It reminded me that I’m still me.

Warm.

Funny.

Engaging.

Confident.

Vibrant.

Beautiful.

It also reminded me that I could have a fun, flirtatious interaction with a charming stranger, enjoy every minute of it, never exchange phone numbers, and happily go on with my day.

That realization felt surprisingly freeing.

There was a time when I might have interpreted attention as possibility.

Yesterday, it was simply a lovely little interaction between strangers that ended exactly where it should have.

As I drove home later, I found myself thinking about the irony of the whole experience.

Not because I know whether my ex watched any of it.

I don’t.

Not because I know whether it affected him.

I don’t.

He may have remained completely engrossed in the story he was telling his coworkers.

But I knew he was there.

I knew how close he was.

And I couldn’t help but think about the contrast.

This was the man who told me he wanted me to be my person.

Who promised me safety.

Who worked hard for my trust.

Who told me he was consistent.

Who said he would always be there.

He courted me.

He invested time in me.

He gave me thoughtful, incredibly expensive gifts.

He built a future with beautiful words.

And while I believed every one of them…

He was lying from the very beginning.

He was deceiving and manipulating me.

He was cheating.

He was living other lives I knew nothing about while looking me in the eyes and promising me safety.

Those words deserve to be named.

Not because I’m bitter.

Not because I need revenge.

But because they are true.

The hardest part wasn’t discovering who he really was.

The hardest part was accepting that the man I loved wasn’t the man I believed he was.

I didn’t walk away because I stopped loving him.

I walked away while I still loved him.

That distinction matters.

Because choosing myself wasn’t the easy choice.

It was the hardest choice I have ever made.

I chose my dignity over my feelings.

My self-respect over the future I thought we were building.

Reality over the story I desperately wanted to believe.

Which is why I couldn’t stop smiling as I drove home.

Not because another man flirted with me.

That wasn’t the point.

The point was that somewhere along the way, something had changed inside of me.

Standing in the middle of that restaurant, laughing with a charming stranger and his fishing buddies while my ex sat only one table away, I realized I wasn’t hoping to be chosen anymore.

I already had been.

By me.

Years ago, I would have believed my future was tied to one man.

Yesterday reminded me that my future isn’t tied to anyone.

It’s tied to the choices I make.

And every meaningful choice I make now begins with self-respect.

I have so many options.

I always have.

One of them just will never again be him.

Because despite loving him with everything I had...

I finally loved myself enough to leave.

I chose my dignity.

I chose my self-respect.

I chose my future.

I chose myself over a small man with a mouth full of stones.

And that has turned out to be one of the best decisions I've ever made.
