I am a month into my not-smoking journey.

What started as cutting back on the number of cigarettes I smoked each day while I was in Seattle extended into life back at home.

It went from:

How many do I smoke today?

To:

How many days can I go between cigarettes?

To not smoking an entire cigarette on the days I did smoke.

To none at all.

I was irritable.

My lungs craved the familiar feeling.

My brain felt WEIRD.

And since not many people knew I smoked, I wasn’t really sharing my progress with anyone.

It was uncomfortable and dumb.

And here I am.

I haven’t had a single drag of a cigarette in well over a week.

I still have cravings.

My lungs still want the feeling.

My brain still wants the hit.

But something has shifted.

My desire to not smoke is stronger than my desire to smoke.

And when the craving comes, it is getting easier to just move along with my day.

A month ago, I was trying to smoke fewer cigarettes.

Today, I don’t smoke.

I call that a success.
